Out and About with DMC Recruitment – Rising Minds Forum
This month, I had the privilege of speaking at Sexton Group’s preliminary Rising Minds forum, held in Toronto. This event gathered a dynamic group of next-generation rising stars from the Retail Building Materials Industry to share insights, discuss challenges, and debate best-in-class business strategies.
In my segment, I led a conversation focused on incentivizing salespeople within a retail lumber or building materials business. Sexton had thoughtfully invited a selection of vendors who brought their own rising stars, allowing us to tap into a diverse range of opinions and experiences.
The heart of my presentation revolved around examining various commission models, including the simple percentage model, tiered commission, gross profit commission, and profit share structures—such as company-wide profit share, performance-based bonuses, and departmental profit-sharing. This discussion sparked valuable insights and highlighted the importance of aligning incentive structures with business goals.
The second session shifted our focus to the merits of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems. We delved into user cases, shared experiences with different specialty vendors, and explored the successful implementation of CRM into sales forces. This conversation underscored the critical role that technology plays in enhancing sales effectiveness and driving business growth but highlighted the importance of effective implementation.
Personally, I found the day to be incredibly rewarding. It got me thinking about the potential for a recruitment equivalent where agency owners could come together to share experiences, offer advice, and collaboratively tackle challenges. Despite our different business models, it became evident that many challenges faced by business owners—whether running a retail lumber yard or a recruitment firm—are quite similar
The face-to-face conversations, open dialogue about business challenges, and the collective willingness to contribute and seek solutions made for an inspiring and motivational day. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Sexton Group for the invitation and for fostering such a collaborative environment. I look forward to more opportunities like this in the future.
