Position Overview
The Senior Estimator is a leadership role within the pre-construction department responsible for managing the estimating process for a high volume of bids related to Division 6 Rough Carpentry scopes. This role oversees a team of junior estimators, reviews takeoffs, coordinates with sales, and compiles final bid submissions.

The position is primarily focused on pre-construction estimating and bid management, ensuring accuracy, organization, and timely delivery of estimates across approximately 150 annual bids.

The Senior Estimator will play a key role in developing the estimating department's processes and mentoring junior staff while supporting the organization's continued growth.

Key Responsibilities

Estimating Leadership & Team Management
  • Lead and manage a team of 4-9 estimators, including training, mentoring, and task delegation.
  • Oversee daily estimating workflow, including scheduling and assignment of material takeoffs and bid preparation.
  • Review and validate work produced by junior estimators to ensure completeness, accuracy, and adherence to company standards.
  • Provide guidance on complex estimates and step in when necessary to support tight deadlines.
Bid Preparation & Pre-Construction
  • Compile and assemble final bid packages from estimates and material takeoffs prepared by the team.
  • Review structural and architectural drawings and specification books to ensure scope completeness.
  • Ensure all major cost drivers and project requirements are captured before submission.
  • Maintain clear documentation and notes for all bids to support future revisions or updates.
Sales & Internal Coordination
  • Coordinate closely with the sales team to provide timely bid information and updates.
  • Communicate estimate details, risks, and clarifications to sales staff throughout the bidding process.
  • Support customer communications when necessary during pre-construction phases.
  • Potentially assist in client meetings or presentations when required.
Systems & Process Development
  • Maintain organized digital file structures and estimating documentation.
  • Utilize estimating software (currently Prebuilt ML) and assist with improving workflows and data management.
  • Identify opportunities to improve estimating systems, processes, and departmental efficiency.
Bid Volume Management
  • Oversee approximately:
    • 100 full project takeoffs annually
    • 50 budget estimates annually
  • Ensure estimating schedules are managed effectively to avoid last-minute bid preparation.
QualificationsExperience
  • Significant experience in construction estimating, ideally in rough carpentry or structural framing scopes.
  • Experience managing or mentoring estimating teams.
  • Experience preparing and assembling complete bid packages.
  • Background in prefabrication, wood framing, or building materials is highly desirable.
Technical Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings.
  • Experience reviewing specification books and construction documentation.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, and estimating software platforms.
  • Strong file management and documentation practices.
Industry Background (Preferred)
Candidates may come from backgrounds such as:
  • Estimating roles in construction or building materials
  • Prefabrication or panelized construction companies
  • General contractors or developers
  • Experienced framers, foremen, or site superintendents transitioning into estimating roles
Personal Attributes
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capability.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent bids and deadlines.
  • Self-starter who can improve systems and propose new ideas.
  • Strong communication skills for cross-department coordination.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary range: $100,000 - $110,000+ depending on experience
  • Extended health and dental benefits
  • RRSP program:
    • Company contribution: 2.5%
    • Additional 50% match up to 4%
  • Vacation starting at 2 weeks (negotiable for senior candidates)
  • Flexible working hours with core office hours 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Limited work-from-home flexibility
