Lumber Commodity Buyer – Truss Manufacturing Location: Headingley, Manitoba
Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Compensation: Approximately $100,000 annually, depending on experience

The Opportunity

Our client is an established Manitoba manufacturer of roof and floor truss systems serving residential, multifamily, commercial and agricultural construction projects.

They are looking for an experienced Lumber Commodity Buyer to oversee lumber purchasing for their truss manufacturing operation. This is a key position responsible for monitoring commodity markets, negotiating with suppliers and ensuring the plant has the right materials available to support production requirements.

The ideal candidate understands lumber markets, purchasing and inventory management within a truss plant, lumber yard, building components manufacturer or building materials business.

What You’ll Do
  • Purchase dimensional lumber and related commodities for roof and floor truss production
  • Monitor lumber markets, pricing trends, availability and lead times
  • Negotiate pricing, purchasing terms and delivery schedules with suppliers
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with mills, wholesalers and distributors
  • Coordinate purchasing decisions with production schedules, inventory levels and sales forecasts
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels while limiting overstock and unnecessary carrying costs
  • Review historical usage and upcoming production requirements to anticipate material needs
  • Track purchase orders, shipments and supplier performance
  • Work with production, sales and operations to respond to changing priorities
  • Identify alternative suppliers and products when availability or pricing changes
  • Monitor material quality and work with suppliers to resolve shortages or quality concerns
  • Support accurate costing and margin management
  • Maintain organized purchasing, pricing and inventory records
  • Assist with customer and sales requirements when needed
What You Bring
  • Experience purchasing lumber or wood products within a truss plant, lumber yard, building materials operation or component manufacturing business
  • Strong knowledge of dimensional lumber, grades, species and commodity pricing
  • Experience monitoring markets and making purchasing decisions based on pricing, demand and inventory requirements
  • Established relationships within the Western Canadian lumber market would be an asset
  • Strong negotiation and supplier-management skills
  • An understanding of roof and floor truss manufacturing is preferred
  • Experience with inventory management and purchasing software
  • Strong analytical skills and confidence working with costs, margins and market data
  • The ability to balance production needs with inventory and cash-flow considerations
  • Clear communication and strong cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Experience in contractor sales or customer account management would be an asset
