Our client is seeking an experienced and driven Branch Operations Manager to lead our Edmonton lumber distribution facility. This role will oversee all aspects of branch operations, including logistics, warehouse, yard management, and inventory control while ensuring a strong focus on safety, efficiency, and profitability.
 
This position requires hands-on leadership to drive operational excellence, process improvements, and high-performing teams across multiple shifts. The successful candidate will be responsible for budget management, KPI tracking, cost control, and workforce supervision while ensuring the seamless flow of materials from warehouse to customer delivery.
 
Key Responsibilities 
 
Operational Leadership & Logistics
  • Oversee daily and nightly operations, ensuring efficient material handling, receiving, and shipping of lumber and building materials.
  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize logistics, warehouse operations, and supply chain processes.
  • Ensure on-time and accurate order fulfillment, coordinating with dispatch and transportation teams for efficient delivery scheduling.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and lower operational costs.
Inventory & Warehouse Management
  • Maintain accurate inventory control, ensuring proper stock levels and reducing shrinkage.
  • Implement warehouse layout strategies to improve workflow and material accessibility.
  • Oversee cycle counts and audits to ensure inventory accuracy and compliance with company standards.
  • Work closely with procurement and purchasing teams to forecast inventory needs and optimize stock levels.
Team Leadership & Workforce Management
  • Lead and manage yard, warehouse, and logistics teams, including supervisors, forklift operators, drivers, and laborers.
  • Develop and implement staffing plans and shift schedules to meet operational demands.
  • Train, mentor, and develop employees to build a high-performance culture focused on accountability and teamwork.
  • Foster clear communication between shifts and departments, ensuring smooth transitions and workflow.
KPI Management & Budget Oversight
  • Set and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for productivity, efficiency, customer service, and cost control.
  • Manage operational budgets, labor costs, and expense reports, ensuring financial targets are met.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction, efficiency improvements, and revenue growth.
  • Prepare and present performance reports and operational reviews to senior management.
Health, Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, company policies, and industry standards.
  • Conduct safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to minimize workplace incidents.
  • Implement training programs and best practices to promote a culture of safety and accountability.
  • Investigate and resolve accidents, near misses, and compliance issues, enforcing corrective actions as needed.
Qualifications & Experience
✅ 5+ years of operations management experience in lumber, building materials, or distribution/logistics industries.
✅ Proven experience managing a 24/7 or multi-shift operation, including night shifts.
✅ Strong leadership experience in warehouse, yard, and logistics team management.
✅ Expertise in inventory control, supply chain management, and material handling.
✅ Proficiency in budgeting, KPI tracking, and process optimization.
✅ Strong knowledge of safety regulations and compliance standards (WCB, COR, etc.).
✅ Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
✅ Hands-on experience with ERP/WMS systems and logistics software is a plus.
